Singapore's role as a base for serving family offices across Asia Pacific is marked by a milestone this week, as Northern Trust celebrates the 30th anniversary of its Singapore branch. Since opening there in 1996, the bank has expanded its support for asset owners, asset managers and family offices as they navigate an increasingly complex investment landscape, it said.
A family office desk since 2022
Northern Trust's Global Family Office business established its Asia Pacific presence in Singapore in 2022. It serves single family offices and private investment companies whose needs are increasingly global and sophisticated, connecting them with capabilities spanning asset servicing, technology and reporting, lending and investments.
Alongside that, Northern Trust Asset Servicing offers global custody, fund administration, investment operations outsourcing, foreign exchange, securities lending and brokerage, while Northern Trust Asset Management serves institutional investors with quantitative and index equity, fixed income, and liquidity and cash solutions.
Continued investment in Singapore
Yen Leng Ong, country head of Singapore at Northern Trust, described Singapore as a cornerstone of the firm's Asia Pacific strategy for 30 years and an important centre for serving clients across the region. She said the firm remains committed to investing in the people, capabilities and technology needed to support clients' evolving requirements.
The anniversary comes as Northern Trust continues to build out its Singapore operations. Recent milestones include the launch of its Singapore unit trust offering and the expansion of Northern Trust Asset Management's liquidity capabilities.
Angelo Calvitto, head of Asia Pacific at Northern Trust, said Singapore remains one of the most important investment centres in Asia Pacific, and that the firm continues to see opportunities to support clients as their operating models, distribution ambitions and regulatory requirements evolve.
Founded in Chicago in 1889, Northern Trust reported assets under custody or administration of $19.9 trillion and assets under management of $2.0 trillion as of 30 September 2026.
For family offices weighing where to anchor their Asian operations, the milestone is another sign of global providers deepening their commitment to Singapore as a regional hub.
