Helmut Jeggle spent more than ten years managing the fortune of Andreas and Thomas Struengmann, and their holdings in logistics, health care, and manufacturing.
Jeggle is now launching his own family office, Salvia, after acquiring stakes in firms along with the Struengmann twins, who manage a fortune of $30.7 billion.
Salvia invested in around six companies in 2021, which was the same year that Jeggle resigned as the managing director of Athos, the family office of the brothers. Jeggle and also owns a stake worth around $350 million in BioNTech SE, the company that developed a Covid-19 vaccine, where he is also the chairman.
Jeggle took around half of his team from Athos to Salvia when he left in April and still continues to manage about a dozen investments of the Struengmann brothers, which includes a stake in BioNTech, which makes up more than half their wealth.
Bets and Crypto
While Jeggle plans to focus on direct investments for his family office, he also plans to use its funds to explore areas that he is less familiar with, such as cryptocurrency.
Jeggle has an MBA from the Stuttgart Institute of Management & Technology, and began working for the Struengmanns, around 20 years ago when they owned Hexal, the drug-making company. He helped to combine Novartis AG and EON Labs and began his career at Athos in 2007.
“It was really interesting for me to go from being a typical back-office finance guy to getting involved in a family office of this size,” said Jeggle. “After a couple of years, the family said, ‘OK, pharma is where we have our roots, so we want to stick in that area,” he added.
“We behave as we did before,” commented Jeggle on his relationship with the Struengmann brothers. “I came to them on the last day of my contact and said, ‘By the way, this is my last day.’ They said, ‘No, we are not saying goodbye. It’s a new address — nothing else,” he added.
